Introduction to Papermaking Workshop

July 18, 2026 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Description

Learn the basics of hand papermaking as we explore basic techniques and experiment with
different botanical ingredients. No experience is necessary. Papermaking is a perfect medium
for beginners, and for experienced artists, it is unlike any other medium! We will learn the basic
history of papermaking, the fundamental materials and tools, and then dive into sheet
formation as we use beautiful flowers and other botanical materials to design and enhance
each sheet. Items may be gathered outdoors for use in paper designs. Students will leave with
their “wet leaves” and be offered ideas for further exploration and development. Each paper
can become a framed work of art, an item of stationery for personal use, or a unique gift! Be
prepared to get wet and messy while learning this exciting renewable technique.

This event is sponsored by Kumari of the Woods, Strafford, VT.

Materials:
The instructor will supply papermaking materials, screens, tubs, pulps, etc.. as well as a
limited amount of inclusions for the paper: yarn, strings, dried botanicals, scraps, etc.
Open to adults only and students can bring as much of their own collection as they may have of:
dried botanicals, scraps of paper, strings, anything small and flat they would like to embed
into the paper (mica, glitter, small flakes of shells, spices, leaves, flowers, strings, yarn,
ribbons, etc…) Many things work, be creative! Think small and flat!
